A recent poll nuancing the American attitudes regarding abortion concludes the practice does not enjoy broad public support. 65% of Americans believe abortion in the second trimester should be illegal, with mostly democrats in favor. However, 80% of Americans across all demographic profiles, including democrats, think abortion should be outlawed in the third trimester.
Since legalizing abortion in 1973, the Supreme Court has not permitted state restrictions on abortion prior to their arbitrary ‘age of fetal viability’ set at 24 weeks. This may change given the court’s decision to consider allowing states to restrict abortion earlier in the second trimester at 15 weeks. If the court rules in favor of the restrictions, harmonizing with the beliefs of the majority of Americans, the window of time in which a woman can get an abortion in the U.S. could narrow.
