Religious employers should not be forced to hire people who disagree with their beliefs. But since 2011 states like California and Michigan banned religious institutions from hiring and managing staff according to the organization’s views. The Supreme Court has consistently ruled that Christian organizations should be free to hire people who uphold their beliefs. Despite the high court rulings, states like Massachusetts continue piercing the integrity of the first amendment rights of Christian organizations, making it illegal for them to hire and manage staff consistent with the organization’s core beliefs. New York, too has made it illegal for churches, schools, and Christian non-profits, like pro-life pregnancy centers, to require their staff to hold the same beliefs. CompassCare sued the state to protect the first amendment freedom of all religious employers. The case is ongoing.
