Fearing the conservative leaning Supreme Court will overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade decree legalizing abortion nationwide, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowed to bring a massive abortion expansion bill to the floor for a vote. She did. That bill is called the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA). The bill goes far beyond Roe, nullifying all state restrictions on abortion including parental consent requirements. On September 24, the House narrowly passed the abortion bill along party lines. The bill now goes to the Senate. But pro-abortion Senator Susan Collins said she opposes the bill as she finds the language “extreme” and would “severely weaken” medical professionals rights of conscience to opt out of participating in abortion without sacrificing their careers. President Biden signaled he will sign the bill if it gets to his desk.
