Recent reports reveal 115 COVID-19 vaccines under development. So far, sixteen of the COVID-19 vaccines are in clinical trials.
Methods of vaccine production are varied and highly complex. However, development of a common type of vaccine requires two basic elements: 1) a genetically modified version of the virus that does not replicate itself and 2) cells for the virus to grow in. The cells used to grow the virus during the manufacturing process can be adult stem cells, insect cells, and animal cells. However, five of the sixteen COVID-19 vaccines in clinical trials use aborted fetal cells for production. This is viewed by many as unethical.
Being ethical means respecting the dignity of every human life without exception. If there are ethical ways of manufacturing a vaccine why would a pharmaceutical company choose otherwise?
